Starbucks opens first India store in Mumbai

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 19 Oktober 2012 | 22.27

MUMBAI, India — Starbucks inaugurated its first store in India Friday in a historic building in southern Mumbai as the Seattle-based coffee giant seeks growth in a market long associated with tea drinkers.

"It is perhaps the most elegant, beautiful, dynamic store we've opened in our history," chief executive Howard Schultz said in an interview.

After over six years of studying the local market, Starbucks is making a rapid-fire entry into Asia's third-largest economy. Coffee houses are still a relatively new trend in India, and the chains already in business sell cappuccinos and lattes well below Starbucks' usual prices.

The company, in a joint venture with Tata Global Beverages, plans to open two additional stores in Mumbai next week — on Wednesday in the Taj Mahal Palace hotel and on Thursday in the Oberoi hotel across town — before launching in New Delhi early next year.

For the flagship Mumbai store, Starbucks chose the historic Elphinstone Building in the Horniman Circle neighborhood of south Mumbai, not far from a vast Hermes shop and a stately local park maintained with funds from the family foundation of Italian designer Ermenegildo Zegna.

The flagship, which can accommodate 120 people, is a cool, soaring space, with hand-carved wooden screens, thick tables of solid Indian teak, painted vintage trunks and old leather-bound books.

Schultz said he hoped the effect would be like "walking into a shrine of Starbucks coffee."

The shop will offer free Wi-Fi and stay open until 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1 a.m. on weekends, unusually late for Mumbai cafes.

The 42 menu items reflect local as well as Western tastes, featuring items such as Elaichi Mawa croissants — made with cardamom and milk solids — and tandoori paneer rolls.

The prices position Starbucks at the premium end of India's coffee cafes, with a 12 ounce cappuccino retailing for a little over $2.

"We've been trying to in a sense crack the code here," Schultz said. The company decided early on they needed to enter India with a local partner, as they did in China. Schultz said he spoke with many interested parties, but none "had the complete suite of things we felt were necessary to build a big, enduring business. That changed the day we met Tata."

Schultz came to India in November 2010 to begin "substantive conversations" with the salt-to-SUVs Tata conglomerate, which were followed by meetings in Seattle and a January 2011 coffee sourcing agreement with Tata Coffee. A year later, Starbucks announced it had formed a 50-50 joint venture with Tata Global Beverages called Tata Starbucks Ltd. At the time, the vice chairman of Tata Global Beverages, R.K. Krishnakumar, said the joint venture hoped to open 50 stores by the end of 2012 — a statement Starbucks has since tried to distance itself from.

The company won't comment on expansion targets, but Schultz pointed to Starbucks' presence in other markets as examples of the scale he is interested in. There are more than 700 outlets in mainland China, he said, and 1,000 in Japan. While those numbers are dwarfed by the over 10,000 outlets in the United States, Asia has emerged as a key driver of growth.

"Asia and the entire Pacific Rim present one of the most significant growth opportunities within Starbucks Coffee Company," Schultz said. "India is at the core, along with China."

Starbucks said in April that China — where it opened an average of one store every four days during fiscal year 2011 — will likely be its second-largest market by 2014.

The partnership with Tata has brought Starbucks access to some prime real estate for its outlets. The Elphinstone Building, for example, is owned by Tata Sons, the holding company that controls the Tata Group. The Taj Mahal hotel, site of the second shop, is also a Tata property.

Mass. hospitals reach deal on trauma patients

Steward Health Care System will send its most seriously injured trauma patients to two Boston hospitals operated by Partners HealthCare System under a deal struck between the state's two largest health care providers.

Steward, a for-profit chain that operates 10 community hospitals, has been sending critically injured patients from its emergency rooms to five Level 1 trauma centers in Boston or to hospitals in Worcester and Providence. The patients are often victims of shootings or car crashes.

The Boston Globe reports that under the new arrangement, Steward will send most patients to Partners-owned Massachusetts General Hospital or Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Doctors from Partners will also work with Steward hospitals to set up their own trauma centers that can treat patients with less serious injuries.

Mass. casino application process begins

What promises to be a lengthy vetting process for would-be Massachusetts casino developers has officially begun.

The state's gaming commission planned on Friday to make available on its web site Phase 1 applications for developers seeking one of the three licenses for destination resort casinos permitted under the nearly one-year-old gambling law.

The applications are due back within 90 days and must be accompanied by a $400,000 fee.

The commission will review the submissions from developers to determine if they are qualified financially and have no outstanding legal or ethical issues that would disqualify them from bidding for a license.

Applicants that pass the first test will be allowed to move on to the Phase 2 application process and bid competitively for one of the regional casino licenses.

Reebok outfits America's tallest man with custom-made sneakers

Igor Vovkovinsky, the tallest man in America, has found his footing.

Yesterday in a private setting at the Rochester Athletic Club in Rochester, Minn., Vovkovinsky -- who measures 7 feet, 8.33 inches tall -- received his very own, custom-made sneakers from Canton-based Reebok.

After years of never having shoes that fit him properly, leading to multiple foot surgeries, Vovkovinsky, 30, has three pairs of Size 26 sneakers.

In early 2012, he started a website, Facebook page and Twitter account to ask for donations in order to pay for custom shoes. Reebok created them free of charge.

Bain bus protestors blast Mitt Romney's outsourcing record

Dozens of workers from companies affiliated with Bain Capital, the private equity firm founded by GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, demonstrated in Boston yesterday, blasting Romney for vowing he'll be tough on China, the very country to which their jobs are being shipped.

In rallies outside Bain's headquarters in Copley Square and Romney's campaign headquarters in the North End, where they unfurled a 40-foot banner urging "Stop the Romney Bain Economy," employees of Sensata Technologies, which Bain bought in 2006 and still owns 51 percent of, said some of them have been forced to train the Chinese workers who will replace them before the year's end.

"(Romney) plans to run this country like a business, and right now, the most lucrative business is outsourcing," said Dot Turner, who, at 62, will have to start a second career after the Freeport, Ill., plant where she has worked for 43 years closes. "Romney would treat the United States like a business acquisition."

In an email last night, a spokeswoman for Romney, who left Bain Capital in 1999 but remains an investor in the company through his blind trust, said he "built Bain Capital by fixing broken companies and helping new ones grow. The new companies he helped launch — including Staples, Sports Authority and Bright Horizons — have created 100,000 jobs."

A Bain spokesman declined to comment.

EarlySense wins FDA clearance for new bedside-monitoring system

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 17 Oktober 2012 | 22.26

Waltham-based EarlySense Inc. said today it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for an updated version of its bedside system that monitors and documents vital signs in patients.

"EarlySense is the first in the world to combine contact-free respiratory, cardiac and motion monitoring with oximetry. This means, that for the first time ever, hospitals have the ability to monitor the oxygen saturation of a patient in addition to automatically, continuously and in a contact-free manner, monitor that same patient's vital signs and movement," said EarlySense CEO Avner Halperin. "The oximetry component, meant for post-surgical patients who require a higher level of supervision, seamlessly integrates into the existing EarlySense system, including the central display station. The combination of deliverables provides clinicians with a flexible tool to facilitate individualized care plans for optimal clinical outcomes on the medical surgical floors."

The new oximetry feature of the EarlySense System will be introduced at Medica 2012 in Germany next month and officially launched into the market in 2013. The EarlySense System is a contact-free, patient monitoring solution that measures vital signs and movement using a sensor that slips under a bed mattress.

Quest Diagnostics inks deal with UMass Memorial Medical Center

Quest Diagnostics said it has signed a definitive agreement to buy the clinical outreach business of UMass Memorial Medical Center for an undisclosed amount.

Financial terms of the transaction are expected to be completed in the next 90 days. It is expected the full transition of services will take place over the next 18 to 24 months, with further details to be announced as they are finalized.

Quest said the sale is the first step toward building a long-term relationship between the two organizations that could result in UMass Memorial taking a financial stake in a new entity that would develop and operate a state-of-the-art laboratory in Massachusetts in the future.

Quest's full-service lab in Cambridge and its Athena Diagnostics specialty neurology testing subsidiary in Worcester will move to a new facility that is expected to be centrally located in the area. The facility, when fully operational, will perform the testing currently performed at UMass Memorial's Worcester-based outreach laboratories, the Quest testing currently performed in Cambridge, and the testing performed by Athena.

AAA: Vote 'yes' on Right to Repair ballot question

AAA Southern New England is urging Massachusetts voters to vote yes on a "Right to Repair" question on the November election ballot, saying there should be no compromise when it comes to vehicle owners' rights.

"Right to Repair" would require auto manufacturers to make all service and diagnostic information available to consumers and independent repair shops, not just their franchised dealership service centers.

"AAA wholeheartedly believes that motor vehicle owners have the right to choose where they want to have their vehicles repaired," said AAA Southern New England President and CEO Mark Shaw. "Your vehicle produces valuable information about its health and condition. AAA thinks you should own this information, all of it, and should be free to share it as you see fit."

Earlier this year, the state Legislature passed a compromise bill on the issue, but AAA said the bill doesn't require automakers to share all of the information on telematics. This information would allow some pending vehicle problems to be diagnosed remotely.

"Massachusetts is setting the standard by which this vital consumer protection issue is defined, and will be the model for the rest of the nation," Shaw said. "Yes, the 'Right to Repair" legislation passed this year was a victory for consumers, but it doesn't go far enough to assure that vehicle owners won't have to compromise their repair and possible privacy rights due to a last-minute legislative loophole."

Multivitamins can lower men's cancer risk, huge Brigham study finds

Swallowing a simple daily multivitamin can reduce a man's risk of cancer, say the Brigham and Women's Hospital researchers who plan to release results of their jaw-dropping study at a cancer research conference today.

The data comes from scientists who tracked the health of 15,000 men, all 50 or older, for 10 years.

Half the men in the group took a multivitamin every day, while the other half took a placebo.

All of them were required to tell researchers about any cancer diagnoses they received. Researchers confirmed those diagnoses through the men's medical records.

Researchers now say that the men who took daily multivitamin had an 8 percent reduction in total cancer, when compared to the placebo-taking group.

"Despite the fact that more than one-third of Americans take multivitamins, their long-term effects were unknown until now," said Dr. J. Michael Gaziano, lead author of the blockbuster study, and the head of Brigham and Women's aging division.

Intrigued scientists say the study's results could be far-reaching.

"Many studies have suggested that eating a nutritious diet may reduce a man's risk of developing cancer," Brigham and Women's epidemiologist Howard D. Sesso said. "Now we know that taking a daily multivitamin, in addition to addressing vitamin and mineral deficiencies, may also be considered in the prevention of cancer in middle-aged and older men."
