BBC chief: Abuse report was 'fundamentally wrong'

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 10 November 2012 | 22.26

LONDON — BBC Director General George Entwistle says a report wrongly implicating a senior politician in child-abuse allegations should never have been broadcast.

On Friday, the broadcaster apologized "unreservedly" for airing a "Newsnight" program with accusations from a victim who claimed a one-time senior Conservative Party figure had abused him.

"Newsnight" didn't name the politician, but online rumors pointed to Alistair McAlpine, a member of the House of Lords. McAlpine fiercely denied the allegations, and the victim retracted his claim, saying he had misidentified his abuser.

Entwistle told BBC radio Saturday that staffers could be disciplined for a broadcast "so fundamentally wrong." He also insisted he had no intention of resigning.

The BBC is already under fire for not airing allegations that its late star host, Jimmy Savile, sexually abused children.

John Henry quits trading after striking out

Red Sox owner John Henry is getting out of the business that made him rich.

After years of dwindling returns, the enigmatic billionaire's commodity trading firm, John W. Henry & Co., reportedly told clients it will no longer manage their money as of Dec. 31.

The firm's assets have gone from $2.5 billion in 2006 to less than $100 million today.

In an email to the Wall Street Journal, Henry said: "The firm has been small since 2007 and once assets fell below $100 million this year the company became too small to sustain itself."

Known as a trend follower extraordinaire, Henry began trading corn and soybean futures with his own money in the 1970s before being recognized as an industry savant.

Henry hasn't had a hands-on role in his firm for years, but whether that's related to the slump is unclear. According to performance data on the JWH website, the five funds it offers have lagged far behind the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500. In one particularly poor result, the firm's main commodities trading program, JWH GlobalAnalytics, has a negative 32 percent one-year annualized rate of return compared to positive 30 percent rate for the S&P 500. The firm's decline in assets began largely in 2005, when Merrill Lynch defected.

Financial planner Barry Armstrong, owner of Armstrong Advisory Group in Needham, said commodities trading is a high-burnout business.

"You're watching weather reports, you're watching the news, you're waking up to read things," Armstrong said. "By the time you're 50, you feel like you're 80."

He added, "you're only as good as your last wager."

Despite size, mansion feels like home

Somehow this brick Colonial in Wayland manages to have a homey feel despite 10,500 square feet of living space.

Built in 2001, 190 Old Connecticut Path has high-end finishes such as triple crown molding, paneled wainscoting and custom cherrywood built-ins.

On the market for $3,899,000, the home has 2.3 acres of land, five bedrooms, seven bathrooms and garage parking for six cars. There are three refrigerators and dishwashers, three custom-built cherrywood media centers and even a surround-sound home theater with eight plush leather chairs. The backyard has a large in-ground pool with just-replaced pool equipment as well as a basketball sports court.

Three front entrances help create separate wings that reduce the scale of the massive home. The vaulted main entrance opens into a marble foyer with a spiral staircase and a tucked-away half-bath. Then, there's a large, columned sunken family room with vaulted ceilings and an alabaster chandelier. One corner has a wall-length media center, a large gas fireplace and glass doors out to the backyard. The dining area has a cherrywood built-in hutch and a bar against one wall.

The adjacent kitchen features an island with two layers of granite counters, custom cherrywood cabinetry, a Thermador gas stovetop and two wall ovens, two dishwashers, a compactor and a cabinet-enclosed Sub Zero refrigerator.

Off one side of the kitchen is a formal dining room that looks out into the backyard. On the other side of the kitchen is a den/home office with cherrywood wainscoting, a media built-in and a gas fireplace.

To the far side of the kitchen is a slate-floored mud room, a laundry room, a trash room and direct access to a heated ceramic floor three-car garage. Across the driveway is a second three-car garage wired for sound with a car-washing system.

Back inside, on the opposite end of the main kitchen is another kitchen and dining area and an adjacent slate-tiled bath with a walk-in shower designed for users of the in-ground backyard pool. There's even a guest bedroom here.

A winding staircase leads up to four bedrooms on the second floor, off a landing with a marble-topped built-in. The master bedroom at the end of paneled, wainscoted hallway has a vaulted ceiling, a walk-in closet and a dressing room with vanity and a marble-surrounded whirlpool tub and walk-in shower. Outside the suite is a laundry room with a stacked washer/dryer and a folding counter.

There are three other bedrooms on this floor, two with en-suite bathrooms. The fourth bedroom, currently used as a home office, has steps up to a media room.

The home's finished lower level — with 10-foot ceilings — has a game room with a kitchen area and a carpeted exercise room.

There's also additional storage, a utility room with the home's gas-fired hydro air heating system, central air and central vacuum systems.

Over rocks, other hard places

'Strong," "tough," "enduring" — just a handful of terms that describe those who serve our country as members of the armed forces.

These characteristics also apply to some of the world's most rugged and capable off-road sports utility vehicles and pickup trucks.

And while off-road dynamos aren't known for their fuel economy, it's their rough image and presence on our nation's streets and highways that epitomize the definition of "powerful."

"They certainly exude strength. They exude a lot of attitude. That's part of their appeal," said Scott Oldham, editor-in-chief of Edmunds.com. "Arnold Schwarzenegger didn't drive a Hummer because it got good gas mileage. The image attached is a big selling point. It's the same mindset when a guy goes out and buys a Corvette or sports car."

Certain large-scale models, such as Chevy Silverado and Ford F-Series pickups, have been the pride of the auto industry for decades (on Monday we'll highlight the industry's veteran models), while others rev up within a smaller market niche.

This Veterans Day we salute all who have served, regardless of their rank and military branch. Be prepared to do the same for the following models — our top 10 greatest tough and rugged vehicles for 2013.

10. Nissan Xterra

In the age of SUVs based on sedans, the Xterra has a truck mindset, a robust suspension and a drivetrain perfect for off-road adventure. Yet the model tends to put performance and rugged capabilities over comfort and fuel economy. For those ready for fun in the wilderness, this is "a different beast" to get behind the wheel of, said Oldham, adding: "If you want comfort and economy, you buy a Mazda C-X5. If you want to go off-road and put a mountain bike wherever you need it to be, you buy an Xterra."

(Max Tow: 5,000 lbs; Max MPG: 18; MSRP: $30,592)

9. Toyota 4Runner

This is the first of three Toyota offerings on this list. A well-known, capable, mid-sized SUV for decades, the five-door 4Runner remains one of the Top 10 factory built, off-road machines still out there, yet a recently designed model is "not quite as hard-core as its predecessors, which is why it's No. 9," Oldham said.

(Max Tow: 5,000 lbs; Max MPG: 19; MSRP: $38,824)

8. Jeep Grand Cherokee

As rugged and off-road capable as ever, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a "best of both worlds vehicle" that offers smooth on-road capability and the "high levels of comfort expected at its price point," Oldham said. Leather-lined interiors, for example, contribute to the mid-sized SUV's luxurious feel. "It doesn't feel very much like a truck until you ask it to do something only a truck can do," Oldham added.

(Max Tow: 7,400 lbs; Max MPG: 19; MSRP: $38,258)

7. Chevrolet Silverado

Spain's PM seeks end to mortgage arrears evictions

MADRID — Spain's prime minister says his government aims to fast track reforms to halt evictions related to mortgage non-payments after a woman committed suicide as bailiffs arrived to repossess her flat.

The death of 53-year-old Amaia Egana, who threw herself from her fourth-floor balcony as bailiffs arrived Friday, has caused a national outcry.

Mariano Rajoy said Friday that current legislation was allowing "inhuman situations" to occur as people unable to keep up with repayments were forced from their homes while still saddled with the remainder of their mortgage debt.

Rajoy said he wants "a temporary stop to evictions" by introducing a better code of practice among lenders that would allow renegotiations of debt, or an agreement permitting debtors to remain in their homes for longer when this was not possible.

Brandon Lloyd's leap

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 09 November 2012 | 22.26

By now, word has gotten out about Brandon Lloyd's daring jump over a car that was traveling 35 miles per hour as part of a challenge by Mobile Technology's company MobiSquad.

For those who were more than a little concerned the Patriots [team stats] wide receiver was unnecessarily risking his health and jeopardizing his status with the AFC-East division-leading club, fear not.

The video of Lloyd's amazing leap, which was shot in Arizona during the offseason and is expected to be released early today, isn't quite what it seems.

Lloyd, in fact, yesterday admitted there were some "camera tricks" involved, and he would never put himself in harm's way with his career on the line. He understands how it might seem, but cautions not to get too caught up in the danger element.

''It's more so about the product than the actual act,'' Lloyd said. "As an athlete, when you do something like that, and it seems like there's a lot of danger involved, and there's a lot of controversy, it raises the awareness. The product is a mobile payment device for small businesses.

''I think that's more (the message) than the danger involved,'' he went on. ''Obviously, I'm not going to do anything to jeopardize my career ... so we can say I jumped a car for small business.''

Lloyd said if the personal risk was too great, he wouldn't have been involved. As for signing off with Patriots coach Bill Belichick, the wideout, who has 37 catches for 435 yards with three touchdowns, indicated he hadn't since it was filmed in the summer.

Also, to try and prevent people at home from trying to repeat the feat, Lloyd indicated there is "a large disclaimer" before the video warning this challenge is not advised.

LA Laker Kobe Bryant performed a similar stunt.

So why was Lloyd chosen to leap over MobiSquad's signature purple Smart Car?

He still holds his high school's record in the high jump at 7 feet, 2 inches, and wasn't too bad in the long jump and high hurdles.

Said Lloyd: ''It was amazing.''

The Pats receiver indicated he became involved through friend Nate Reis, the CEO of MobiSquad.

''He's been a friend of mine for three years,'' Lloyd said. ''He thought it would be a good idea to see if we could do a partnership. So we were just tossing around some ideas.

Students, mentors invest in StoxSmart

The Herald's StoxSmart program is back as a new class of budding student entrepreneurs learn the money management and financial skills necessary to tackle the unpredictable stock market.

Suffolk Construction CEO John Fish returns for a second year, this time to mentor two Madison Park Technical Vocational High School students.

The program's second installment also welcomes a new mentor, Dr. Ralph de la Torre, chairman and CEO of Steward Health Care System, who will team up with TechBoston Academy students Edson Brito and Ephraim Norman.

StoxSmart mentors, who include Herald business editor Frank Quaratiello and Cabot Money Management President Rob Lutts, work with their student partners to come up with the best way to invest $1 million in the stock market.

The contest officially kicks off Jan. 1 and runs through the first quarter. The Herald will keep tabs on the competition every Monday in the BizSmart section and with a blog at bostonherald.com.

"The idea here is to learn as much as you can and have some fun doing it," Herald publisher Patrick Purcell told students yesterday.

"Really try to make the most of the experience, because it's a unique one," added Editor-in-Chief Joe Sciacca.

Fish and de la Torre have agreed to provide complimentary iPads to the students and to work with other Hub business leaders to create summer internships.

"It's a fabulous time to get involved and ask a lot of questions and challenge yourself to ask those questions," Fish said.

Brito, a 17-year-old senior, agreed: "I want this to be a huge learning experience for me."

De la Torre said StoxSmart would establish "a framework to learn about business stocks as well as expand horizons."

"We're going to talk about the market and think about opportunities that are America- and world-driven," he said.

US futures off before Obama addresses fiscal cliff

NEW YORK — U.S. stock futures fell sharply Friday in some of the heaviest trading this week before President Barack Obama speaks about avoiding the so-called fiscal cliff, an issue that has driven markets lower since his re-election three days ago.

Dow Jones industrial futures slid 102 points to 12,673. The broader S&P futures gave up 11.2 points to 1,364.10. Nasdaq futures fell 14.75 points to 2,575.

What Obama says Friday from the White House will likely give markets a better idea of the path ahead in a showdown with Republicans, and the odds of avoiding the one-two punch of tax increases and automatic spending cuts that come due in January.

On the corporate front, J.C. Penney shocked investors again with a loss of $123 million for the quarter. Like the previous quarter, it is much worse than was expected.

Much of the turnaround push at J.C. Penney has been focused on modernizing tired and deteriorating stores. However, even online sales were terrible.

At a time when some retailers are seeing online sales double, sales through jcp.com plunged 37.3 percent from the same period last year.

It marked the third consecutive quarter of overall losses and plunging sales as well.

J.C. Penney shares fell 6 percent before the market opened.

MoneyGram agrees to settle scam charges

DALLAS — MoneyGram said Friday that it has agreed to set up a $100 million compensation fund as part of a settlement of government allegations of fraud through money-transfer scams from 2003 to 2009.

Under the terms of the deal with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and the Department of Justice, MoneyGram International Inc. said it has also taken other steps to prevent more scams. These include adding more investigators and beefing up technology to detect fraud.

The payment services provider said it has terminated relationships with the agents suspected of masterminding the fraud. It said it has also overhauled its corporate compliance program and began a new training program for agents to better sniff out and report scams.

The company previously set aside the money to compensate victims.

"The conduct described in the (settlement agreement) is unacceptable to MoneyGram and counter to everything we strive to stand for," said Pamela H. Patsley, chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement. "We take compliance very seriously at MoneyGram, and nothing angers us more than when our services are used to perpetrate illegal activity."

The Dallas-based company also said Friday that it lost $54.1 million, or 77 cents per share, in its third quarter due to costs related to the fraud settlement and related legal expenses. It had net income of $15.8 million, or 22 cents per share, a year ago.

Its revenue rose 5 percent to $338.6 million from $322 million a year ago.

It now expects full-year earnings to come in at the low end of its previous expectations.

Chrysler to recall 919,000 SUVs to fix air bags

DETROIT — Chrysler is recalling more than 919,000 older-model Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs worldwide because the air bags can inflate while people are driving them.

The recall affects Grand Cherokees from the 2002 through 2004 model years and Libertys from model years 2002 and 2003, according to documents posted Friday on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

The safety agency said that a part can fail in the air bag control computer, and the front and side air bags can inflate while the SUVs are being driven. An agency investigation started last year found that the air bags went off 215 times, causing 81 minor injuries. No crashes were reported, but NHTSA said the problem could cause a wreck.

Chrysler, which makes Jeeps, will install an electrical filter free of charge to fix the problem. The company will begin notifying owners of the recall in January.

The recall includes nearly 775,000 SUVs in the U.S., 49,000 in Canada and 22,000 in Mexico. The rest are outside North America.

Dashboard warning lights normally come on before the air bags are inflated, Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne said. If that happens, the driver should contact a Jeep dealer.

The problem happens in less than three-hundredths of a percent of the vehicles on the road, Mayne said.

NHTSA began investigating the air bags in October of last year after getting complaints about air bags inflating for no reason in Jeep Libertys. Investigators traced the cause to electrical stress on one of two circuits in the control computer. The problem also causes the seat belts to tighten as if a collision were about to happen.

The Grand Cherokees covered by the recall were built from Aug. 1, 2001 to May 16, 2003, while the Libertys were built from June 6, 2001 to March 19, 2003.

Shoe store doesn't fit with hotel

Written By Unknown on Senin, 05 November 2012 | 22.26

Plans for a boutique hotel in Boston's Downtown Crossing have garnered widespread support — but not from the owner of a longtime shoe store who must permanently check out from the building that will be gutted for guest rooms and new ground-floor retail.

"It's hard for me to look at it positively," said Foot Paths owner Steve Rollins. "I'm not saying I don't agree with the (hotel) concept, but it impacts me so severely it's hard to get up and be so rah-rah about it."

Rollins, who opened his store in a building at the corner of Washington Street and Temple Place more than 15 years ago, was excited by recent signs of a resurgence in the shopping district, including a skyscraper project to fill the gaping hole on the Filene's block.

But in August, shortly after he signed a five-year lease extension, Chicago developer Oxford Capital Group stepped in and bought the building and unveiled its 240-room hotel.

A clause in the lease allows for evictions in the case of a building demolition — even an interior renovation — so Foot Paths now has until next August to vacate the premises. The hotel project also will force out a package store and jewelry business, and office tenants from the upper floors.

At first Rollins figured he'd go kicking and screaming, but he found an adequate alternative up the street, renting the former Aldo shoe store space at 415 Washington for a second store that opened this weekend. The original will eventually close.

The downside there is the lack of display windows wrapping around a corner.

"The (shopper) traffic is a little bit better, but we're going to give up a lot of visual impact," he said.

To make matters worse, Oxford Capital recently wrapped 59 Temple Place in scaffolding to start repairs to the 11-story facade, obscuring Foot Paths' signs and shelves as it enters the crucial holiday shopping stretch.

"We're certainly sympathetic and providing whatever assistance we can," said Brad Mulvihill, a senior director at Oxford Capital, who will be in Boston for Wednesday's public meeting on the hotel project.

Peter Meade, director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, said he dispatched community planner Randi Lathrop to help the affected businesses.

"Hopefully this ends up being a win for them as well as for the people building the hotel," he said.

MassMutual approves $1.39 billion in dividends

SPRINGFIELD — Insurer MassMutual Financial Group has approved an estimated $1.39 billion in dividends to participating policy holders in 2013.

Company officials say it is the highest payout in MassMutual's 161-year history. The dividends include a dividend interest rate of 7 percent on all eligible participating life insurance policies, unchanged from 2012.

The estimated payout of $1.39 billion is an increase of more than 4 percent more than the $1.33 billion in 2012.

John Chandler Jr., MassMutual's chief marketing officer, tells The Republican newspaper that despite the economy in general, MassMutual continues to do well.

Chandler said whole-life insurance policies are the most-familiar of the policies that make people participating policy holders. Those holders are the owners of MassMutual, which is a mutually-held company. The dividend represents the company's profits.

China launches WTO case against EU solar subsidies

BEIJING — China has filed a World Trade Organization case challenging subsidies provided by some European Union members to help promote the solar panel industry, adding to a flurry of trade disputes that Beijing is locked in with Europe and the United States.

Commerce Ministry spokesman Shen Danyang said in a statement Monday that China brought the case against EU members that have provided subsidies for solar projects in which the main components are manufactured in European countries.

Shen said such subsidies "seriously damaged China's photovoltaic exports."

The case follows an anti-dumping probe Beijing announced Thursday into European exports of polysilicon used in making solar panels. Before that, the EU launched an investigation in September into whether Beijing was improperly subsidizing exports of solar panels.

China and its trading partners pledged after the 2008 global financial crisis to avoid taking actions that would hamper trade but have launched a series of anti-subsidy investigations and imposed punitive tariffs on some goods.

Solar and other renewable energy technology is especially sensitive because governments that are under pressure to cut high unemployment see it as a growth industry and source of well-paid jobs.

Washington imposed tariffs of up to 250 percent on imports of Chinese-made solar panels this year to counter what it said was improper subsidies to the industry.

The disputes have added to financial pressure on Chinese and other solar equipment producers that are suffering heavy losses due to lower sales and a price-cutting war.
