Babson College's president, Len Schlesinger, will step down at the end of the academic year to spend more time with family.
The Wellesley business school said a search committee has been set up to find a successor to Schlesinger, who became the 12th Babson president in July 2008.
Schlesinger, a former executive at retailer Limited Brands and bakery and cafe chain Au Bon Pan, said in a statement that he wants to "reorient" his attention to family members.
"An orderly transition for the president's role over the coming months will make that possible," he said in a statement. "I value, above all, the opportunity to attend more closely to my mother at a time she requires closer support and more time as well with my children as they pursue their respective journeys locally, on the West Coast and in Australia."
Joseph Winn, chairman of Babson's board of trustees, said the school, which specializes in entrepreneurial studies, has "never been in a stronger position by almost every measure."
"The college has joined the ranks of America's elite schools and the opportunities that lie ahead for Babson have never been more exciting," Winn said. "The board shares Len's view that this is an opportune time to initiate a transition process."
The search committee -- led by cable technology entrepreneur and former New Hampshire Gov. Craig Benson -- will start working immediately, with "listening sessions" for the Babson community scheduled for later this week.
