More than 93 million Americans will trek 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holidays, a 1.6 percent increase over last year, AAA Southern New England said today.
The rise brings holiday travel figures to within a half million of the decade-high mark seen during the 2006-2007 Christmas-New Year's season. The holiday period is defined by AAA as being from Dec. 22 to Jan. 1.
More than 84 million travelers, or 90 percent, will travel by car, representing 26.7 percent of the total U.S. population, AAA Southern New England said, adding holiday air travel is expected to rise 4.5 percent to 5.6 million travelers from 5.4 million in 2011.
AAA's projections are based on economic forecasting and research by IHS Global Insight.
